What is early literacy?

Early literacy is what children (birth – age 5) learn about reading and writing before they read and write on their own.

Little Free Libraries

Have you heard about little free libraries? They are in about every community in Wake County. A little free library is usually a wooden box where you can exchange books – “take a book, return a book”. The library box is maintained by a steward who keeps the books organized and takes care of any maintenance the box may need over time. Little free libraries are a great resource for families to find new-to-them books to read, while also allowing them an opportunity to leave books for other readers.

A smiling young girl with braided hair decorated with colorful beads stands in a play kitchen area. She is wearing a black t-shirt with a pastel rainbow heart design and denim shorts. In front of her is a small table set with colorful placemats, bowls, and toy food including grapes and bread. A mirror behind her reflects her image, and the word “Mirror / espejo” is labeled at the top. Brightly colored chairs, a play shopping cart, and other toys are visible in the background

Reading and Recipes

Cooking with your child can be a great way to encourage and strengthen their early literacy and math skills. It is one of those daily activities kids absolutely want to be a part of, even from an early age. Children love feeling like they contributed and are proud of their work in the kitchen.

In addition to having some fun, children can learn the following skills:

  • Reading for Purpose
Reading does not always involve fictional stories. It exposes them to new words and improves their critical and analytical thinking.
  • Sequencing
Recipes and directions follow steps that are to be followed in a particular order. This is an important skill for younger children to comprehend.
  • Measurement
Recipes require us to make sure that amounts are correct, or the end product will not turn out as hoped.
  • Oral Language, Listening, and Comprehension
Health and safety are huge elements of baking and cooking. Adults can help by making sure hands are washed, long hair is pulled back and potholders are used for transferring hot food.
  • Creativity
Decorating and making the food item look interesting and presentable.
  • Develop Independence
By working with an adult, children get to practice some basic kitchen skills and, as a result, develop increased confidence in food preparation.

Artwork and photos are displayed on the wall beside them, and a green potted plant is in the foreground
